Some of SteelCo’s projects still adhere to the conventional project delivery approach. In the Design-Bid-Build method, the project owner first hires an architect or designer to create detailed construction plans and specifications. Once the design is finalized, the owner puts the project out to bid, inviting construction firms to submit proposals based on the provided plans. Contractors then bid on the project, offering their estimated costs for construction based on the provided design documents. The owner selects the contractor with the most competitive offering and bid, and the construction work begins once the contract is awarded. This method allows for a clear separation between the design and construction phases, providing the owner with more control over the design process and potentially lowering construction costs through competitive bidding.
One potential advantage of the Design-Bid-Build approach is its transparency and accountability. Since the design and construction phases are handled separately, there is a clear distinction of responsibilities between the architect, the contractor, and the owner. This division can lead to more thorough oversight and quality control throughout the project’s lifecycle.
